Project: Write, perform, or illustrate a fairytale about a world in which humans have adopted a non-human system for communicating, remediating, conducting hygiene, or constructing shelters.
In the works cited, the following systems exist as human constructions. But they also exist as systems without human interventions:
Communications System (Andy Gracie) (Michael Mandiberg) (Tomas Saraceno) (Lily Yeh) (Marina Zurkow)
Remediation System (Mel Chin) (Hans Haacke) (Jae Rhim Lee) (Pedro Reyes) (Superflex) (Viet Ngo)
Sanitation System (Hans Haacke) (Marjetica Potrc) (Mierle Ukeles) (Lily Yeh)
Architectural System (Friedensreich Hundertwasser) (Marjetica Potrc)
Project: Like humans, many birds, insects, mammals, amphibians, and fish construct functional systems. Nonetheless, humans and non-humans often utilize very different organizational structures and strategies. Many of the artists in this section are closing this gap by modeling their human systems on non-human models. Write, perform, or illustrate a fairytale about a world in which humans have adopted a non-human system for communicating, remediating, conducting hygiene, or constructing shelters.
Research / Discussion: Select a recent news story that provides an example of a human system being modeled on a non-human system. Compare the system in the news report to an example of that system as it was proposed by the following artists in this section: communication (Saraceno, Yeh); remediation (Haacke, Lee, Reyes, Superflex, Ngo); sanitation (Haacke, Potrc, Yeh); architecture (Hundertwasser, Potrc).
