Project: Your project involves introducing others to sustainable consumer habits.

Project: Although Yun and Talen favor reducing the waste, pollution, and resource use associated with consumerism, they do not provide strategies to accomplish this goal. Find a partner who is not involved in this class and conduct each of the following ways to accomplish this goal. Apply each to an object you would otherwise have discarded. Your project involves introducing others to sustainable consumer habits.

The object is fixed when it breaks.

The object is given to someone who can use it.

The object is actively maintained to extend its original use (e.g. car tune-ups).

The physical form of an object is retained but a new use is invoked (e.g. an empty ketchup bottle becomes a vase).

The physical form of an object is altered to accomplish a new use (e.g. rubber from an old tire is used as shoe soles).

Research / Discussion: Examine each of the five strategies for retaining consumer goods that are listed above. Discuss examples when these strategies are too inefficient, too costly, or too polluting to contribute to the goal of achieving sustainability (e.g. replacing an engine in a gas-guzzling car).
