Project: Water is a formless, colorless, tasteless, and odorless liquid that flows predictably from a tap. Despite all the qualities that water lacks, it has a complex personality.

It is:

-meddlesome, actively seeping into the tiniest crevices and permeating the greatest expanses of the atmosphere.

-gregarious, continually absorbing, dissolving, and transporting other materials. Water transports sediment, pollutants, litter, pesticides, fertilizer run-off, nutrients, and many other substances from place to place.

-schizophrenic, providing the essential resource to sustain life but it also kills and spreads disease.

Using water as your medium, create a work of art that demonstrates at least one of these three water traits.

Research / Discussion: Although 70% of the Earth is covered by water, it is not always in the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity, and of the right quality for sustaining life. Each art work discussed in this section manifests a specific aspect of the Earth’s complex water systems:

Bayer – water floods and erodes.

Haacke – water condenses and evaporates.

Harrisons – ice melts and seas rise.

Ji – water produces energy and dissolves contaminants.

Ngo – water collects wastes and gets polluted.

Steiner & Lenzlinger – water becomes salinized and there are droughts.

Choose one of the water-related works of art in this section and conduct research on the issue it addresses to convey its global implications.
