Gum Arabic – from the bark of acadia trees, is a water-based binder. Add gelatin or honey to make it flexible. Gum Arabic is a renewable resource

Methyl Cellulose – from plant fibers

Animal-Based Binder
These adhesives are created by prolonged boiling of animal connective tissue - skins, bones, tendons, and other tissues, similar to gelatin. Animals commonly used are horses, rabbits, and fish. It can be attained in the form of powdered gelatin.

Gesso
Ingredients: whiting (Plaster of Paris or chalk, gelatin, honey)

Instructions: In a bowl, mix one part whiting with one part hot water. In a separate bowl, add one part gelatin to eight parts hot water and stir until gelatin dissolves. Add one part gelatin mix to ten parts of the whiting mixture. Add a few drops of warm honey. Mix well. The mixture will thicken upon standing. Store in air tight jar.

Gouache
Ingredients: water-based binder, honey, pigment, whitin

Instructions: Mix one part honey with nine part water-based binder. Mi one part whiting with six parts pigment. Mix one part binder-and-honey mixture with one part pigment-and-whiting mixture. Store in air tight jar.

Varnish:
Ingredients: One egg white

Instructions: Whip one egg white until it thickens. Place the shipped white in a glass container and cover it with water. Cover container and allow it to sit overnight. Remove the liquid that accumulated and use as varnish.
